What to Include in a Dog First Aid Kit

Accidents can happen, as can pet emergencies, and just like we have human first-aid kits, it’s also a great idea to have a dog first-aid kit for your furry loved one. A DIY dog first aid kit should be kept in something that’s easy to travel with, that way you can bring it with you when you go on hikes, road trips, camping or to a cottage. Keep your dog first aid kit in a box, shoulder bag, backpack, fanny pack or container so that you can easily grab it and go. Having one in the car is also a good idea.

You should, of course, always speak to your vet after your dog gets hurt. However, if you can’t get to the vet for care, or your pooch needs immediate treatment before you can reach a vet, you’ll be thankful that you have fist-aid kit handy.

Sometimes in an accident, your dog’s collar may come off or break. The same is true with a leash. Having extras available is always a good idea, and a first-aid kit is a great place to keep them. They will also come in handy if you happen to stumble upon a lost or stray dog while out. Now that you have all of the necessary items for you DIY dog first aid kit, here are ways to use these items to treat common injuries.

If your dog is in a fight with another dog, or another dog bites your dog, it could leave a puncture wound. Bites can get infected if not treated right away, and the best way to do this is to clean it with antibiotic ointment and put a bandage on it. If the bleeding is excessive, use blood clotting powder. It’s very important to also bring your dog to the vet as soon as possible to ensure there aren’t any muscular or tissue injuries.

This can happen to their paw, leg, face, pretty much anywhere. You want to do the same as you do with a dog bite; clean it, disinfect it and wrap it. If there is a splinter or another object, use your tweezers to remove it first.

Your dog’s nail can break or split, or even be cut to the quick when cutting his/her nails yourself. If this happens, stop the bleeding with styptics and then wrap it with gauze or bandage. If the nail is broken or split, be sure to also visit the vet, as it could get infected or be causing pain.

As a dog owner, you should always be ready for emergencies by having a dog first aid kit. This will save you a lot of stress, and your pooch a lot of pain and suffering when you can’t get them to the vet. As well, you should always have a bottle of water with you and some treats, and maybe even some extra food just in case you are stuck somewhere and your dog needs to be fed. No one wants to think about having a doggy emergency, but accidents do happen, so it’s always a good idea to be prepared.

Best Winter Boots: Tips & Top Picks

Dogs are usually more than happy to go on a walk on their bare paws. However, sometimes the weather conditions make this harmful; like during an Ontario winter. Not only can your pooch’s paws get cold, but harsh chemicals used to melt the snow and ice are very harmful. They also cause a lot of discomfort, making their walk a lot less enjoyable. As well, snow and ice can collect and built up between your dog’s toes and on the under-pads of their paws, making walking uncomfortable and painful.

Putting boots on a dog is not always an easy task. And watching them get used to having them on their feet will make any dog owner laugh! Once you get through the initial stages and your pooch starts to tolerate wearing winter boots, then walking will become just as enjoyable as it was during other seasons in Ontario.

What to look for in your dog's winter boots

The first thing to do is to determine what the most important aspects are for your pooch. Things like your dog’s size, energy level and the terrain will be a big part of that decision. Before you go out and spend a lot of money on winter doggy boots...

           Consider these thing:

The sole of the boots should be textured to provide a good grip

The material of the boots should be waterproof or water-resistant

The sole should be flexible so that your doggy can walk naturally

They should have adjustable straps to make it easy to take them on and off

On harsh days, opt for dog winter boots that are lined with fleece or some sort of insulation to keep their paws warm

How to choose the right winter boots for your dog

There are a lot of different winter boots on the market for your pooch. So how do you choose the right ones?

           Size

Having the right size winter boots for your dog is the most important part of choosing the right boots for your furry loved one. If they are too tight, then your dog will not only be uncomfortable, but his/her movement may be restricted. If they are too loose, they can slip right off and make walking difficult (clown shoes).

To measure your dog’s paw, you want to use the measurement of the widest part of his/her paw as well as the longest (including the nail). You can then use these measurements to compare different brands and select one that is the perfect fit for your pooch.

           Traction

Different weather conditions require different grips, especially throughout the Ontario winter. There are days where everything turns to ice, and others that leave the sidewalks filled with slush. Be sure to buy winter dog boots that are suitable to the conditions outside. This may mean having a couple of boots to select from that are suitable for the conditions for the day. For example, on a cold day where there is likely to be ice, opt for dog boots with a good grip on the sole.

           Fasteners

Most doggy boots have a Velcro strap, which fastens at the narrowest point of your dog’s leg. This makes it easy to get the boots on and ensure that they stay on. However, there are also other types of fasteners on some boots. Elastics, zippers and drawstring cords may be seen, which take more time to out on, but also ensure a secure fit. Opt for the fastener that is easiest for you and your pooch.

           Material

Like human winter boots, dog boots come in a wide range of materials. Choose a material that you would opt for when buying your own winter boots, and make sure that they are waterproof or water-resistant. Look for boots that have a winter-ready lining as well. A good rule of thumb is that if they will keep your feet warm and dry, they will do the same for your beloved dog.

These boots are arguably one of the best, safest and most high quality boots available today. And they are excellent for the Ontario winter. They are waterproof, warm and have a reflective velcro strap. On top of that, the soles are durable and non-slip, making them perfect for an ice day. The wide split seam makes them easy to get on and off, while the two velcro straps keep them in place. So even if your dog likes to play in the snow, these boots should stay on his/her paws.

comes in six different colours and seven different sizes, so there should be one that’s just perfect for your pooch. Although these are my top pick, there are a couple of cons to these dog boots. First, they are quite heavy, so they are not suitable for an older dog that may have joint problems. Second, they can’t accommodate dog’s that have a dewclaw.

Ultra Paws are easy to get on and off thanks to their split-seam and two Velcro fasteners. Plus, their foam ankle pads not only make them extremely comfortable, but also ensure a snug fit. They are great for all dogs from puppies to seniors, having a rubber non-slip sole for great traction. The downside is that they only come in two colours and five sizes.

If you have a large dog, these are the best winter boots for him/her. Still, dogs of any size will love these winter boots, as they are comfortable, practical and will keep their paws nice and dry. They are easy to get on and off thanks to their wide opening, and fit securely on your pooch’s paws thanks to the two secure closures. The first closure is a reflective velcro strip, while the second is a draw-string at the top of the boot. Plus, they are 15 percent spandex for an added cozy fit.

Plus, they are great for dog owners on-the-go, as they are easy to toss into a bag or purse. They are excellent at keeping your dog’s paws dry, but aren’t very warm. However, they can easily be pulled over a pair of dog socks.

However, they have no grips on the soles so they aren’t the best for days that are ice, but will protect your pooch’s paws against water, snow and salt.

There were a few things I considered when choosing my top pick of the best winter boots for dogs. I looked at styles, comfort, how easy they were to buy and if there was enough variety to fit the most teeny tiny dog all the way up to XXL breeds. Plus, because Ontario winters can be harsh, I selected dog boots that can sustain the Ontario winters.

Safest Dog Pools: Tips & Top Picks

Many dogs love swimming, but finding a place for them to swim can be a problem. Public pools are not open to dogs, and most human pools are not suitable for doggies due to chemicals and the filtration system. This is when a doggy pool comes in handy. Plus, not only does it give your pooch a place to swim, but it’s also a great cooling device in Ontario’s hot summer months.

Dog pools look like kid’s pools, but they are quite different. They are usually PVC, like a kid’s pool, but they have a coating that can better withstand their nails. They come in all sizes to accommodate dogs of different weights and breeds, and are often collapsable is that you can take them with you when you travel or go camping.

Types of dog pools: choosing the right one

Dog pools can be made from different materials, are different sizes and are different shapes. But in terms of types, there are three basic designs, all of which have their own pros and cons.

           Inflatable Pool

These are the lightest and most portable dog polls on the market, and are great for people on the go. They can fold up quite compactly and be packed away to bring along with you anywhere that you go. However they are quite soft in terms of their material, making them easier for your dog’s nails to puncture them. Inflatable pools are inflatable. So the size of the pool will be a factor. Larger pools will be exhausting to inflate, so be sure to purchase one that can be inflated with a pump.

           Folding Pools

These are also portable, as they can be folded up and easily stored. This also can make them a better option than an inflatable pool, as it skips the inflating part. The walls of folding pools are rigid, so they are quite durable. They also can withstand your dog’s nails. They usually have a drain installed in them, making it easy to let the water out before folding it up again.

           Rigid Pools

These are similar to plastic kiddie pools. They are made from strong, rigid plastic that are extremely durable. They are the most durable of all dog pools and great for families that don’t need to transport their pool around. They can, however, get scratched, but they won’t get punctured by your pooch’d claws. The only downside to rigid pools is that they are harder to store. They are also a bit on the heavy side.

There are so many safety dog leashes on the market in Ontario, from local outfitters to larger manufacturers. These are my top picks for the best and safest leashes for you and your pup.

This foldable dog pool is a favourite amongst many dog parents. Not only is it made to be portable, but it’s also one of the most durable folding pools available, It’s extremely thick on the bottom, making it resistant to dog nails, and it’s side panels are very rigid, ensuring its stability. Plus, it comes with a hose connector, so you don’t have to stand there hold the hose. It’s low side plus makes it as easy to drain as it is to fill up.

Even though dog pools are shallow, you still want to ensure that you pooch is safe. Here are a few safety tips for doggy pools.

Be sure to always keep an eye on your dog

No matter how deep the dog pool is, or how much water you put in it, it’s essential to always keep a close eye on your pooch while they are in a doggy pool. If your dog’s pool us deeper than his/her shoulders, think about using a

           Be careful with multiple dogs

Being in a pool can be an exciting thing. When there are multiple dogs using it at the same time, the excitement can become raved up quite quickly. Pushing, jumping, mouthing and flailing are all things that can happen when multiple fur babies are in the pool at once, so it’s best not to have too many in the pool at the same time to avoid injuries. This is especially true with smaller dogs.

Doggy pools are great in the summer, but not so good in collar months. If the temperature outside gets too low your pooch can get cold. As well, if there’s a

, it can be very dangerous to let your dog be in a doggy pool.

           Use sunscreen

Just like humans, dogs can get a sunburn, and they can be very painful. This is especially true for dogs with thin or short hair. To reduce the chances if a sunburn try using sunscreen made especially for dogs.

Make sure the pool is clean

Over time, a doggy pool can develop a layer if bacteria and/or fungi. This can result in your pooch getting sick, especially if they drink the water. Top avoid this, it’s a good idea to wash your dog’s pool regularly with soap and water. Be sure to use pet-friendly soap and to rinse it thoroughly.

There are others things to consider when buying a dog pool, like the length and height of your dog. As well, if you want to keep it filled with water for a few days at a time, think about buying a pool cover to avoid mosquitoes and debris. Don’t get a pool that is deeper than what your pooch is able to swim in, especially if its a first time for them. And always remember that safety comes first. Think of everything to ensure this and buy a doggy pool that’s right for your pooch. You and your furry loved one will be playing in the sun in no time.

How to Choose a Doggy Daycare

Doggy daycare has been extremely popular for dog owners across Ontario, as it gives your pooch a safe place to interact with other dogs. In addition, it provides both mental and physical stimulation that your dog may not necessarily get at home.

So how do you know which doggy daycare is the right one for your furry family member? Especially considering how popular they now are. There are many styles of daycares, from larger facilities to people offering doggy daycare in their home. Unfortunately, doggy daycare is unregulated, so it’s important to ensure that the doggy daycare you select is the right one.

10 Things to Look for in a Doggy Daycare

            #1 -

           They are transparent

Transparency is always the best quality in choosing a daycare for your dog. You will know that they are transparent if they are willing to answer all of your questions, are open about discussing policies, disclose their training philosophy and are friendly.

Transparency goes even further than that. A reputable doggy daycare will be sure that there are enough photos and videos for you to see to ensure that the facility is clean and the dogs are well cared for. They may not let you have a tour, as some dogs can be reactive towards strangers and it can be stressful. Instead, they may have a window for you to peek in or a live webcam where you can watch what is going on.

            #2 -

           They follow a schedule

This doesn’t mean that the daycares schedule suits yours (although this is a plus), but that they have a schedule that they follow for the pups. Dogs need routine, so it’s important to know if the daycare has a routine in place, like structured play time, nap time, toy time, etc. Do they have areas where they can separate or rotate dogs that want rest time. Or maybe it’s a free for all and the dogs can do as they please, within reason of course.

            #3 -

           They have vaccination requirements

When in daycare, dogs are in very close contact with one another and can even ingest saliva. It is a fast and easy way to illnesses diseases. A responsible daycare will require that all dogs that attend show current vaccination certificates for rabies, bordetella (kennel cough) and DHPP (distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, and parvovirus).

            #4 -

They have spay & neuter requirements

In addition to often having minimum age requirements, a doggy daycare should also have spay and neuter requirements. Regardless of the health implications and dog population problems, unfixed dogs have different personalities than those that are fixed. Intact males can act aggressively towards fixed males, and vice versa. The same is true for female dogs. At the end of the day it’s a safety precaution and one that your daycare should implement.

            #5 -

           They have a trial period

Not all dogs do well in daycare. Some can get anxious, reactive or even shows signs of resource guarding. A daycare should have protocols for what dogs they accept into the pack. This is done by doing a temperament test to make sure that your dog is well suited for a doggy daycare environment. This doesn’t only mean that your dog is comfortable with other dogs, but also with the staff. The staff are the ones handling your dog, so he/she must be able to take instruction and be handled by someone that isn’t you.

A good daycare will first test your dog with staff. Then, once the staff see that there will be no issues, they will do a temperament test with just one or two other dogs. They may also start your dog in a separate area inside of the play area, where the other dogs are visible, to see how she/he reacts. Eventually, they will let your dog play in the main play area with the other dogs. If they do well of course. If not, then your dog is probably not cut out for daycare.

These extra measures are to ensure that all of the dogs are safe and will enjoy their daycare experience. The length of time of the trial period will vary according to the daycare and the dog. But it could be anywhere from one hour to a full day.

there should be one person for every 15 dogs for safety. Some daycares like to have at least one trained human for every 10 dogs. Activity level will play a big part in this. Dogs that are more active will probably require more supervisors, while less active dogs will probably be safe with fewer. Because there are no industry regulations, the ratio of staff per number of dogs will have to be something that you feel comfortable with.

In terms of training, there should be at least one staff member there at all times that is a certified trainer. Again, this is not regulated, but it will ensure that your dog, and the others are safe, and that there is someone that is qualifies in case of an incident, or if a particular dogs needs a lot of extra care. In addition, staff should know how to read dog body language, know how to manage playtime, know how to break up fights, and have pet first aid and CPR certification.

Things can happen at daycare, like, for example, your dog can get scratched, bit or can sprain an ankle. Dogs play with their mouth and paws, so injuries can happen. Because of this, the daycare you choose should have protocols in place. This could be something simple like having a first-aid kit to clean wounds, to more serious emergencies like having to take them to the vet. The staff should be trained on how to administer first-aid when required, but also in assessing if emergency care is needed.

They should have emergency protocols in place of there is a serious injury. This could be contacting you, taking them, to a nearby vet, contacting your vet, etc. As well, if there is an emergency, do they have a vehicle to take your dog to the vet? Are the adequately staffed in case of an emergency? You will most likely sign an agreement or authorization form that states the emergency protocols on it.

Because of staff:dog ratios, a doggy daycare should not have more dogs than it can handle on a given day. This will also depend on the size of the daycare, and what type of daycare it is (which we will go through later).

As well, some doggy daycares separate their dogs based on size or energy level. Some don’t separate, as they feel that all dogs should learn to play and be around all types of dogs. Find one that separates dogs based on what you feel most comfortable with for your dog.

This is especially true if the doggy daycare has an outdoor area. If so, the fencing should be at least 6-feet tall to ensure that no dogs can jump over it and get loose. Fir the interior, there should be a double door system so that dogs can’t run out of the playroom or out the front door and into the street. The dogs should have no direct access to any door that leads outside.

Sometimes when dogs are playing, they forget to go to the bathroom. Holding it in can be dangerous, so it’s important that the daycare takes each dog out for a potty break if they are spending a few hours there. If your dog is there for a full day, then they should go on multiple potty breaks.

These daycares are often completely outside in an enclosed, fenced area, although they can also have an indoor space as well. Basically, dogs can go in and out as they please to play with one another, play fetch with staff, go to the bathroom or even just watch the action from the sidelines. Because an outdoor space is assessable all day, expect your pooch to come home wet and/or dirty. As well, your dog should be comfortable spending ample time outside in all four climates.

These daycares have smaller play areas that are indoor-only, or have an outdoor area that’s separated from the indoor space. They also often have different separated areas to separate dogs based on energy level, play style and size.

These daycares usually only have a few spaces for dogs each day, as the space may typically be smaller and due to licensing issues having a dodgy daycare in a home.

Word of mouth is always a great way to find a doggy day care that’s a good fit for you and your pooch. In addition to these tips on how to choose a doggy daycare, it’s a great idea to also ask around. Ask your friends with dogs, neighbours with dogs or people you meet at the dog park if they go to a doggy daycare, and if so, which one. Getting input and recommendations (or otherwise) is always a good place to start. But the most important thing is that your furry loved one has a good time and is a happy, tired pup when he/she comes home.

One of the most important things to buy for your dog (and you) is a leash. And not just any leash, but the right leash. Leashes are more than just a restraint. They are a way to communicate to your pooch so that you can both have an enjoyable walk. A good leash will help you guide your dog and keep him/her from running off in excitement or fear.

Safety is also a main factor when it comes to dog leashes. There are numerous different leashes that are good for different uses. But basically, what it comes down to is finding the right configuration of material, size and features that are right for you and your dog. It’s also important to remember that a leash can save your best friend’s life. Here are some dog leash safety tips to help you decide which leash is best for you.

to keep your dog leashed at all times when in public, unless in a designated off-leash park. In fact, you can get a fine of $365 for allowing a dog to run off-leash in public. So in addition to a leash being a safety measure, it’s also the law. Dog leashes not only protect dogs from getting injured, for example, but running into traffic. There is also the chance that your pooch will see something to make it bolt, like a rabbit, a squirrel or a deer. In short, a leash is the safest way to walk your dog.

There are so many dog leashes to choose from. Some are basic, while others have all sorts of features and are like the Lamborghini of dog leashes. Here are a few features to look for in a dog leash.

           Feel

A dog leash should feel good in your hand. This will also determine what kind of control it will give you when you are walking your dog. Leashes that are uncomfortable or hurt your hand is a safety issue.

          Durability

This is necessary for all leashes, regardless of whether or not your dog is a puller or not. The more durable the leash, the safer it is. The clasp should be sturdy and able to withstand a strong pull, while the material should be strong enough that it won’t tear.

           Features

There shouldn’t be a lot of extras, as it needs to be functional. As well, some things will be features for some and not for others. A few features to look for include an accessory loop, a reflective strip, a handle or a double clip (used to walk two dogs at once). If you’re a runner, you may want a hands-free leash. If you are leash training, you will want a short leash.

           Style

Although the style of your dog’s leash isn’t as important as the safety of it, it still plays a role when selecting the right leash for you and your pooch. This could be the colour or the design. We all want our dog and his/her leash to match our own style.

There are always basic things that every pet needs for all weather regions in Ontario, like food, water, shelter and exercise. There are also plenty of other things that a dog needs that go above and beyond this, regardless of the weather region. These things help to keep your dog safe and secure at all times, and ensure that they are happy and content.

Just like humans, some dogs don’t like all people or all dogs. In fact, a dog being dog selective is actually quite normal. There are also important things to remember when being around other people and dogs to ensure your dog’s safety.

Dogs can bite for a number of reasons. They can bite out of fear, if they are in pain, if they are protecting something or when they are somehow startled. Plus, the majority of all dog bites happen at home. This means that, as a pet owner, it’s important to learn how to be safe around dogs, regardless of how well behaved he/she is or whether or not it’s your own furry friend. Here are some tips on how to stay safe around dogs.

Teach your kids how to be around dogs

Never leave kids alone with a dog under any circumstances, even just for a moment. That is the most important rule to remember to keep your kids to be safe around dogs, even your own. And even when supervised, kids should learn how to behave around dogs. Teach them what they should and shouldn’t do, like gentle pats rather than pulling on his/her tail.

There are certain breeds that naturally take to the water, and others that don’t. And although most dogs have a natural instinct and know how to swim, this isn’t always the case. As well, just like humans, a dog that is scared or tired can start to struggle when in the water. There could also be something stopping them from staying afloat, like, for example, a wake from a passing boat. For the safety of your dog, it’s important to think about using a safety vest or jacket, also known as a doggy life jacket.

Life vests may seem like an unnecessary thing for a dog, but they can often be extremely important, especially for dogs that spend a lot of time in or near water. Be it a lake at the cottage, a dog park along the Lakeshore or a backyard swimming pool, in some situations a life vest could literally save your dog’s life. But choosing the right life jacket for you furry family member is important.

There are so many dog life vests on the market that it can be a bit overwhelming. On top of that, not all dog life jackets are created equal or are made to fit your dog correctly.

Before purchasing a life vest for your dog be sure to check that it has the following features:

           D Ring

A D-ring allows you to attach a leash to your dog’s life jacket. This ensures that your dog stays close, even if on a long 50’ long leash. It also makes things easy, as there is no need to take the life vest off when using a leash.

           Handles

If your dog falls into the water or is having problems in the water, a handle or handles will allow you to lift your pooch out of the water. Making sure the handles are sturdy and easy to grab is important when choosing the right doggy life vest. A handle will also help you to teach your dog to swim, as you can hold on to it until he/she is a more confident swimmer.

           Colour

Being able to see your furry loved one while in the water is important. The colour of the vest or jacket will help you to do this. Opt for a bright colour, like orange, red, yellow or pink. A reflective strip is also a great idea, especially if your dog will be near water at night.

           Balanced Flotation

This is often overlooked, but is very important. If there is too much buoyancy the life vest can actually flip your dog and make it unable for him/her to swim. Flotation should be in the belly, sides and back, so be sure to look for this. A neck float is also important, especially for dog’s that aren’t strong swimmers. This will support your pooch’s head and keep it above the water.

           Life Vest or Jacket?

If your dog is a casual swimmer that swims in a pool or at the beach, then a vest should be sufficient. It’s lighter and easier to move around in. If you need more buoyancy, a jacket is the way to go. This is also the better choice for boating and water activities.

Making sure the life jacket is the proper fit is extremely important. Your dog should be comfortable in it, have the ability to easily go to the bathroom, be able to sit and lie down in it, and be able to walk, run and jump in it. Most have measuring guidelines, but the best thing to do to be able to find the perfect fit is to measure your dog’s chest, neck and length. The weight of your dog is probably the most important thing. Your dog may be smaller in size, but larger in weight. Or vice versa. Like human life jackets, your dog’s life jacket should be adequate for his/her weight.

comes in red, yellow and camo, and is great for dogs as small as 15lbs and as large as 100lbs. The only complaint that customers had was that it doesn’t fit so great on dogs with thick chests, like Boxers, Rottweilers or Bulldogs.

How to measure your dog for a life vest

As mentioned above, the size of your dog’s life vest is very important. Remember that different manufacturers use different sizing, so the best thing to do it to take three important measurements to ensure that, no matter which life jacket you choose, it’s the proper fit.

           Chest circumference

Wrap a tape measure around your dog’s rib cage to get his/her chest circumference. Make sure that you measure at the largest part of your dog’s chest, which is typically behind the front legs.

Most life vests rest at the lower part of the neck. Wrap the tape measure around the lower portion of your dog’s neck, close to the shoulders, to get the neck circumference.

Measure your dog from the lower part of his/her neck to around two inches above the base of the tail. This will give you your dog’s back length.
